Unleash your engineering and science curiosity with the Smithsonian Robo Spider Science Kit, a hands-on build-your-own robotics project that also teaches mechanics and nature. With parts to assemble 64+ plastic components including a gear box, two battery terminals, motor, and the signature eight multi-joint legs that replicate a spider’s walking motion, this kit invites children aged 8+ to dive into STEM. It also includes a 23″ × 17″ full-color poster that explains spider movement, robotics principles, and walking mechanisms in nature-inspired engineering.
Once built and powered by one AA battery (not included), the Robo Spider comes to life—walking across a flat surface in realistic motion. It’s ideal for classroom settings, homeschool projects or weekend workshops where budding scientists and makers can explore robotics, biology and mechanics in one project. Adult supervision is recommended for the assembly of smaller parts and motor installation.
